Health – Happiness – Friendship – Long life – Skål!
Most of us know the story of the original French founders of Skål International, where on a trip to Scandinavia, they heard Skål! (the equivalent of Cheers! or Na zdraví!) and chose that as the name for the club formed in Paris 1934. Now there are more than 300 clubs in 83 countries with over 12313 members.
Historians believe that skål, which is the word for bowl in Danish, Swedish and Norwegian, harkens back to a time when elaborately decorated wooden bowls would be filled with beer and passed from person to person at community gatherings. Each person would take a drink and say Skål!
Skål is also an acronym:
S = SUNHEIT for health
K = KÅRLEK for love
A = ARUGER for long life and
L = LYCKA for luck
I suspect that the above words were made to fit the word Skål rather than creating it, but could easily be the source of the Skål toast. Certainly, I don’t want to get in the way of a good story.
